The behavior of lava flows is one of the complex natural phenomena that is difficult to be dealt with using traditional methods based on differential equation systems. Novel paradigms of parallel computing for nonlinear modelling and simulation of lava flow are introduced. We have taken advantage of the potentialities of the Cellular Nonlinear Networks (CNNs), and two different approaches have been implemented in simulating some lava flows. Firstly, a typical technique of the CNNs to analyze spatio-temporal phenomena (as Autowaves) in 2-D and in 3-D has been utilized. Secondly, the CNNs have been used as solvers of partial differential equations of Navier-Stokes in the case of Newtonian fluids.
Key words: cellular nonlinear network, numerical simulation, lava flow, Mt. Etna
