Complexity in Robot Engineering.
Luigi Fortuna and Mattia Frasca

The aim of this paper is to introduce as nonlinear phenomena in complex systems can lead to new nonlinear engineering technologies. In particular, several case studies in the design of innovative robots are briefly discussed. It will be faced how in the last ten years in the laboratory of Automation and Complex Systems at the University of Catania the ideas of using the theory of complexity can address to innovative artifacts with industrial and advanced applications. A gallery of robots will be presented and they will be explored showing how each of them can be matched in the universal complexity diagram of Varela and Kantz.
Key words: complexity, mobile robots, emergent behaviour, dynamical systems, synchronization
