NONLINEAR PHENOMENA IN COMPLEX SYSTEMS
An Interdisciplinary Journal

2013, Vol.16, No.1

Preface

Dear colleagues!

This special issue presents the first part of the Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Foundations & Advances in Nonlinear Science and of the Symposium on Advances in Nonlinear Photonics held in Minsk from the 24th to the 28th of September 2012. These events have attracted more than 80 scientists from numerous countries of the world including Belarus and Armenia, Russia and Germany, France and Spain, Portugal and Ireland, Sweden and Australia, Slovenia and Serbia, Rumania and Saudi Arabia. We are happy to note that the graduates of our University, both young and noted scientists who took an active part in these events, are engaged in research and educational work of many foreign universities. The geography of our contacts embraces all the continents and the majority of the European countries.

The distinguishing feature of the science subjects discussed during these events was their interdisciplinary character. The participants had an opportunity to join free and fruitful discussions in various fields of Nonlinear Science and Nonlinear Photonics including such new research trends as nonlinear optical phenomena and laser dynamics, nanomaterials, nanophotonics and nanotechnology, novel materials for nonlinear photonics, self-organization and cooperative phenomena, spatial and temporal structures, patterns in complex media, high energy physics, etc.

The participants have prepared more than 90 oral presentations. The 16th International Conference on Foundations & Advances in Nonlinear Science included the following sections: "Chaos", "Instabilities", "Chaos and Pattern Formation", "High Energy Physics", "Mathematical Foundations and Methods", and "Media". The work of the Symposium on Advances in Nonlinear Photonics was organized in the following sections: "Linear and Nonlinear Waves in Optical Media and Bosecondensates", "Laser Dynamics", "Guided Waves, Filamentation and Harmonic Generation", "Nonlinear Wave-Matter Interaction", "Nonlinear Waves and Solitons", "Light Propagation and Optical Information Transmission", "Diffraction in Nonlinear Medium". A complete Program of the events may be found at the web sita: http://fans.j-npcs.org.

We hope that this special issue may be useful for the members of scientific community, providing new information about modern trends of the interdisciplinary research activities realized all over the world.
