The dynamics of large non-periodic chains with advective coupling between elements is considered. Critical cases in the stability problem for the equilibrium state are identified, and it is shown that they have infinite dimension. Analogues of normal forms - quasinormal forms - are constructed; their dynamics determines the local behavior of solutions of the chains under consideration.
