Calcium Oscillations in the Living Cell: Biological Relevance of Multi-compartment Mathematical Models
M. Brumen, A. Fajmut, and M. Marhl

A two store model and a three store model of intracellular calcium oscillations, both based on calcium induced calcium release mechanism (CICR), are presented. The calcium stores considered are endoplasmic reticulum, proteins, and additionally mitochondria. A comparison of predictions of the two models is biologically performed in order to reveal a possible role of mitochondria as a calcium store.
Key words: intracellular calcium oscillations, mathematical modelling, calcium stores, mitochondria
