Conditions for the formation of spatial optical solitons within a planar layer of nematic liquid crystals (nematicons) have been established experimentally; features of solitons propagation and interaction have been studied. It has been shown that the interaction of two nematicons leads to their spatial attraction and merging. Based on the analysis of the shift of one nematicon under the effect of another one, optical control of the nematicon position has been realized due to change in the power of the another. Capturing of low-power light beam into the waveguide channel formed by the nematicon has been implemented.
Key words: nematic liquid crystals, spatial solitons, nematicons
